The site of a major German gun emplacement, a short distance from the western end of Omaha Beach, Normandy. This target was heavily bombed before the D-Day invasion. On D-Day itself, the bunkers and gun emplacements were taken, at great sacrifice, by US Rangers, who first had to scale cliffs to reach them. The gun emplacements were mostly empty, the guns having been moved some time before. The location is preserved and has started to acquire the atmosphere of a ritual or sacrificial site, a place of arcane mystery. Some of it is still a war grave.
